FORESTRY SCIENCE AND PRACTICE FOR THE PURPOSE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF FORESTRY - 20 YEARS OF THE FACULTY OF FORESTRY IN BANJA LUKA
1-4th November, 2012
Banja Luka, Republic of Srpska/B&H

Second Announcement and Call for Abstract
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to send you second announcement for International Scientific Conference “FORESTRY SCIENCE AND PRACTICE FOR THE PURPOSE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF FORESTRY - 20 YEARS OF THE FACULTY OF FORESTRY IN BANJA LUKA” that will be held in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1 and 4 of November, 2012.
This Conference marks 20th anniversary of the Faculty of Forestry in Banja Luka. Sustainable development of forestry is linked to the development of forestry science and its implementation in practice. Forests, as the most complex terrestrial ecosystems on Earth, are exposed to various negative impacts, which cause a growing need for a stronger link between forestry science and practice. The Conference will address the role of forestry science in forestry practice in terms of realization of different forest functions and values which are the most relevant for sustainable development of forestry. Consequently, ecological, economic, and social functions of forest ecosystems under different management regimes will be discussed. The Conference will take a holistic view of the interaction between forestry science and practice and it will also invite papers on the sustainable development of forestry. International Scientific achievements and practical experiences that will be presented during the Conference will make it possible to define measures for prevention of negative impacts on sustainable development of forestry, provide impetus for educational work and link research activities with forestry practice.
The aim of the conference is to provide a synoptic overview on latest observations in forestry, new approaches and suitable management concepts based on sustainable development.
We look forward to see you in the Conference.

VENUE:
The conference will be held in Banja Luka, the Republic of Srpska (B&H). The city is located in Western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Banja Luka used to occupy the biggest municipality area in Bosnia and Herzegovina and was one of the ten largest cities in the former Yugoslavia. With its population of about 250.000 it is the largest city of the Republic of Srpska and the second largest in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city represents the most significant administrative, economic, cultural and university center of the Republic of Srpska. The town is located in the valley, at the 164 m above the sea level, where the Dinaric Alps from the south descend into the Panonnian Basin in the north. Banja Luka has mild-continental climate with warm summers and mildly cold winters. The average annual temperature is 10,7 C (July 21,3 C/January 0,8 C). The city belongs to the Central European Time Zone (GMT +1). Due to its numerous parks and the tree lined avenues, Banja Luka is deemed the “city of greenery”. It has been also known as the city of youth, sports and beautiful girls. Banja Luka is a member of the network of the biggest cities in the Balkans (Balsinet) and a city partner of many other European cities, such as: Keiserslautern, Moscow, Lvov, Patras, Belgrade, Kranj, Novi Sad, etc. In ex Yugoslavia, the city used to be an important industrial centre for the machine, electrical and paper industry, but also for the textile and food processing. During the civil war period and the subsequent social and economic transition most of the industrial capacity and the respective markets have been lost. Therefore, the post-war Banja Luka has opened more towards the market oriented countries, identifying its development potentials in trade, tourism, agriculture and food processing industry. All necessary information about Banja Luka, you can find on this link www.banjaluka-tourism.com
About virgin forest Janj (field trip)
Virgin forest reserve Janj spreads on 295 hectares of land, and it is about 30 kilometers away from Sipovo. Exploitation has been banned in that area. Since then, the area has been serving exclusively for researches of natural processes of flora and fauna, without human impact. The supervision of illegal use of natural resources and other appearances that could disturb natural life and balance has been increased. The forest mostly consists of beech, fir, maple, elm, ash and spruce trees.

We really hope to have aroused your interest in these important events and would be more than pleased if you joined us in Banja Luka, the Republic of Srpska.
